Fifth Technology Transfer Workshop 4 June 2026 at Maritime & Industry Fair Gorinchem (NL)

This final workshop was organised by SPB/EICB.  The programme, in Dutch language, addressed:

– The future of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) fuels in inland navigation
– The SYNERGETICS decision support tool and handbook for vessel owners
– The Dutch temporary subsidy scheme for early scaling of the energy transition in IWT
– Possible synergies with the European Innovation Fund to develop a break-through of zero-emission in IWT.

The workshop confirmed that FAME blends can be used reliably in many existing engines, provided that vessel owners prepare properly and consult relevant technical and insurance partners. It also showed that practical decision-support tools are valuable for vessel owners when comparing sustainable options for their specific vessel type and operational profile. Finally, the workshop underlined the importance of combining national and European funding instruments to improve the economic feasibility of larger-scale deployment.

Fourth Technology Transfer Workshop: 3 November 2025 Budapest, Hungary (hybrid)

The 4th Technology Transfer Workshop was hosted by Danube Commission as a hybrid event. It will consisted of two interactive sessions:

  • “Steps towards decarbonization and emission reductions in IWT”
    This thematic session focused on energy transition, alternative fuels, and greening of the inland fleet. This session showcased relevant technologies, in particular, in the Danube region, and discussing the Danube fleet zero-emission roadmap.
  • “Digitalization in IWT”
    This thematic session addressed digitalization in IWT as one of the important pillars in the future development of smart and connected IWT and the related actions of NAIADES III. Leading EU-funded projects were invited to contribute to this session.

Second Stage Event: 4 November 2025 Budapest, Hungary (hybrid)

The 2nd Stage Event was hosted by the Danube Commission as a hybrid event.

Main topics discussed during the 2nd Stage event were:

    • “EU IWT Policy” aiming to support policy discussions to achieve modal shift and zero-emission IWT, and to align policy objectives with the sector’s main priorities and needs;
    • “Standards for energy and emission indicators for individual inland vessels on EU waterways” addresses important issues such as the development of the relevant methodologies for greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions and energy performance;
    • “Zero-emission innovations and their deployment/roll-out” focuses on the cost of greening, TCO modelling, market outlook for renewable fuels, good practices, existing barriers, and opportunities on the operational and investment levels.
    • “Human element in IWT and its future development” addresses relevant crewing issues in IWT, the need for skilled labor, education, and training.
    • European IWT Projects Cooperation Platform presents EU projects’ cooperation for creating synergies and added value.

Third Technology Transfer Workshop 26 and 27 May 2025 Duisburg (lunch-to-lunch)

Inland shipping operators, technology providers and the inland shipping-related R&D community did meet on May 26 & 27, 2025, in Duisburg. The PLATINA4Action, SYNERGETICS and BinSmart projects organised the event to discuss these key topics:

  • Experiences with novel propulsion systems on inland and coastal vessels
  • Technologies for improving the energy efficiency and environmental performance of ships
  • Funding opportunities in inland navigation
  • Presentation of the second phase of BinSmart

The event was split into two parts:

Participation in both days was free of charge. The event was funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BinSmart) and the EU’s Horizon Europe Research & Innovation Programme (PLATINA4Action, SYNERGETICS).
